If it were me I guess I'd look at how I'm using the bike, from everything I've read (and this is the only basis of my opinion!) the 03 RR lacks mid range, and the 636s were always supposed to be very good (whether that's down to the extra 37cc I don't know).
So if I ended up touring, or something like that, maybe the midrange is better, but if I only used it for the track, maybe the RR is best.
I wouldn't go down the route of thinking of 'logical progressions' and such like, or what does one do when they get to a litre bike? Surely don't keep it forever, because it's top of the line in the 'logical progression'? I would say just think of what you want - if you try to follow something you 'should' be doing you may not end up with the best bike for you...
