Default Pillions and tyre life

This lunchtime, I read somewhere that (if I can remember the quote now) "carrying a pillion actually extends the tyre's life because there is greater pressure and surface area in contact with the road, so slippage is less - thus tyre life extended".

Not being any kind of physicist this sounds wrong, as surely the increased weight/force = higher friction = a faster rate of wear (akin to a car)? Also, with extra weight, surely the tyre will square off faster too?

Or is it me failing to understand the science behind motorbike tyres?

Cheers,

Al.

PS I'm hoping it's not the latter!
