I do lap timing at the 'Ring for general interest to see how I'm doing, it's a matter of mind set not to get sucked into racing, I always slow for flags, let faster bikes (and cars at the 'Ring) pass me. Again at a trackday it would be interesting to see your general trends, but I agree that it should be about having fun and keeping safe.

At some of the european track days they provide transponders and move people about the groups depending on their lap times. So I don't think timing automatically means more crashes.
