IIRC Patent's are very specific, so your idea of adjustably fixed position outriggers I wouldn't have felt would have any problem with his patent, & may I suggest that your idea is better to have a fixed point at which you have as a target that you can feel it reaching.
3.As to the point made above about saturating your local market - the London Bikers forum organise trips to a Wheelie School in S****horpe! so that's an overnight stay that they are willing to endure in order to attend.
