the suspension is just as capable of doing it off road, the gearing is taller on the SM to give better cruising but you still hit 4th at around 40mph unless you're caning it. plenty of people get a second set of wheels for dirt on their SMs
taking an S onto the road you would want to change the front brake, the larger SM brake isn't the best anyway, the smaller S rotor wouldn't stop you well on blacktop at all, although it is more out of the way when you're off road...
