Just to add a few things if you're selling also, it doesn't cost to get your money out of paypal to your bank account as long as it's more than £50 or so. Sometimes it's nice to just leave it in there then next time you get something on ebay you've already saved up for it, if you know what I mean. If you're a seller, paypal will take approx 4% commision on everything you receive (in addition to your ebay fees).
The protection is pretty good, my friend just bought an imitation iPod (advertised genuine) and he was refunded in a couple of days of opening the paypal dispute. The only problem is they only refund what you pay so he lost out on the postage to return the fake ipod (they refunded as soon as he provided a tracking number so technically he could have returned some doggy doodoo I guess?).
