Maria and Hazel - really sorry tha a sensible post, and some sensible answers, have been tainted by ignorant opinion of both the situation and little Miss A*, rather that fact.

The best thing to do is contact the scool and DCSF, as others have already said (and if you need inside help I can put you in touch with the right person - we do a lot of work with them, particularly on the 16 + side)

As the law stands (and it will change soon, although not kick in for a while - I've been working on the Bill), compulsory schooling finished at the end of the academic year during which the young person turns 16. Schools offering 6th form ought to have sensible arrangements to cater for their 16-18 year olds. Technically, although they are on full-time in learning they only need to attend lessons and any other contact time such as tutorials. Anything else is probably a local rule implemented by the school or the local authority.
