I have in the past seen similar when a customer was trying to pull a large mail file from a POP3 server and it timed out before delivery. At that point he could no longer get any mail.
The answer was to connect to the POP3 server from a command prompt, log in, do a listing, and delete the obvious rogue mail file.
then again, you might be to see the problem if your provider has a web mail service
