It did stop a lot of crud flying up and if you're thinking of a tail tidy, a hugger would be useful as the tail tidy has far less (if any) protection from road crud (especially if you're thinking of taking a pillion) than the stock mudguard.
Now I have my bike back I'm not going to put a hugger on, as to be honest, I think the back end looks better without it. Then again, I'm keeping the stock mudguard on as I have Givi soft luggage that I use for carrying my laptop etc to work and it needs all the protection it can get. Plus I take the missus pillion quite a bit.
EDIT: I'd also recommend a Stebel Nautilus air horn (about £20 off eBay). Easy to fit (there are wiring diagrams on here if you do a search. The stock horn isn't great and the Nautilus makes people think there's a wagon behind them!
