I've dropped my bikes at least a dozen times, usually from being too ham-fisted with the front brake, and that's basically a crash - it scuffs the plastics, breaks an indicator if you're unlucky, dumps you on the ground etc. That's going to be the biggest cause of damage in beginners and one they need to acknowledge, which is why we tell them not to buy a brand new bike.
