Exclamation Puncture repair kits - lifespan

Got the bike out for the daily commute and thought, strewth this is heavy today. Look down and oh, no air in the back tyre! No probs, thinks I, I have a compressor and a puncture repair kit (Rema Rep&Air)...

Insert plug and its splits off the insertion tool. Hmmm. Insert second plug - it does the same. Ah, no more plugs now, so flip the plugs round and have another go, but end up with them both cut in half. Whoops - time to phone the wife and get the cage out

So, does anyone know off hand the shelf-life expectancy of a repair plug? Mine were around the 8 year old mark

and if you have a repair kit - it may be worth making sure you don't leave it lying around too long before replacing the plugs / bungs / strings you carry round in it.
