Have you considered Hard Anodising? Not that I know a lot about it, but the Duke calipers appear to have that finish, inside and out, and I presume that's why they don't gunk up around the seals.

If you could hard anodise calipers it would be bloody excellent. It is one thing I keep meaning to try but never get time.
However I hear cast ally is not the ideal substance... and clearing the old finish off the top would be hard work.
