Proper nut type!
How did it get in that state?....well...that's a long story, but basically due to my doziness in overtightening it in the first place, then using a series of cunning methods from different sized sockets/grips/dremelling/hacksawing etc until I got to a point where removing the entire head to relieve the torque then extracting it was the only viable option.
