Paraffin is way cheaper than any chain cleaner but just as good and re-useable. Fill a large coffee jar with the stuff, clean your chain with a large denture type toothbrush and put the lid on the jar when your finished. All the gunk will settle at the bottom so you can use again on the next clean. Dispose (safely and sensibly of course) every X amount of cleans and refill. Lasts for donkeys.

Re-lube heavily after cleaning as it really gets rid of all the old gunky lube leaving a clean but dry chain.

I find chain cleaning almost therapeutic (sp?) but then im kinda sad like that.
