One guy came in with an old Quantum F that had been custom painted (from the quality, by his 3-year-old son) and as I changed the visor for him, gave it a quick check over. The shell had scrapes and scars all over it, so I asked him if he had dropped it at any point. He responded by saying he'd had it for seven years and had dropped it a couple of times when he was racing, including when he was knocked out after wolloping his head highsiding at Brands Hatch. He said the impact had shattered the holder set, but otherwise the helmet was fine.
Now, bearing in mind the holder set of an Arai is specifically designed to keep the visor and mechanism on the helmet in the event of a crash, that was concerning, so I checked the lining...it was covered in big cracks and dips, especially around the top of the head. It was worn down to such an extent he'd had to have the pads from the helmet the size up put in to compensate. It would have given him all the impact protection of a cardboard hat, and yet he wasn't interested in getting something new.
