Most insurance companies recognise no claims up to 2 years old. So as long as you take out insurance within 2 years of not having any, and you have proof (eg renewal offer letter or cancellation letter) they will usually honour it. Obviously it doesn't accrue when you have no insurance - it picks up where you left off.
