Oh you don't have to do any of it, there are several other options, mostly involving more time and expense, or of course just stop using it altogether.
but for those who value usability and reliability; the above keeps winter servicing to a minimum, I doubt I'll do anything else bar a few oil changes until next year, so I can continue enjoying riding in all weathers.
