Thanks for the tip to undo the lower ball joint rather than trying to separate the ball joint from the hub. I also intend to swap out the stabiliser links at the same time as they seem to be a common fail as well and are only 2 quid.

Also tempted to swap out the front wheel bearings whilst the drive shafts are disconnected. 80,000 miles so probably worthwhile.
