I disagree about some multi gyms, some have some good weights on them, unless you're going after a power lifting medal at the games it should be ok for most.
But, you get what you pay for generally.

Every bit of fitness equipment has its place but machines are to limiting for me, the movement is dictated by the machine action. For instance a smith machine for bench press will go up and down according to the machine mechanism which will no suit everyone's natural movement. Some multu gyms have good weight but unless you pay a fortune they ate designed for joe average. The flexibility of bats, dumbells and body weight is almost limitless where as a multigym is limited to its attachments.
I've use free weights for years on a semi seriouse basis and aching just don't come lose for me
