I'll have another go at it, I just did it from the Haynes last time but there are some clearer threads on here with better pictures.
The the cable is pretty stiff too though once you get past the slack, what's the usual life for one? The bike has done 20k miles. I'll try oiling it at the same time and see if that smooths it out.
