It's not a 'check oil light'. The indicator does not warn of oil level, it indicates a low level of pressure, the oil pump is turned by the engine - engine not running = no oil pressure.

Oil level is checked by viewing the window on the side of the engine by your right toe. Check it often, then do it again some more.
