Is the original chainring dished in someway?

The problem you've got is that the middle chainring has got the ramps which help on the upshift from the smallest chain ring.

If there weren't any spacers that fit in behind the smallest chainring, I'd say your new one is for old style square taper non hollowtech chainring.

I can't say that's right, but my old style chainrings are flat, like your new one & I've got an old style chainset
