I call them single hexagon or double hexagon sockets, and you are 100% correct, double hex sockets which only locate on the corner of nut or bolt head are so useless I am surprised they still make and sell them. The double hex on a ring spanner is there to let you have more choice of positions for the main body of spanner, but sockets normally have a ratchet handle and even if they don't there is the square on the drive that allows some latitude in handle position.
