You miss Lammy's point. There are times when the right thing is to stand up to the electorate and tell them they are wrong.

Was it right that William Wilberforce stood up against people for the abolition of slavery? Was it right Churchill stood up to Hitler? Was it right Bevan stuck to his guns? And was Lammy right to defy his constituents over the Duggan shooting? Without this strength we would be living in a world where there are slaves in a Nazi state with no health care and rioting on the streets.
I'm grateful that sometimes a politician makes a stand against the stated views of the people. They are fearlessly political debates at the time, but years later you look back and are baffled why.

Politicians do not have to blindly follow what the majority of the constituents say. That is wrong. That is a myth. That is a story pushed regularly by newspaper owners peddling their own agenda. That is the road to a parliament of two houses: Twitter and Facebook.
