just to clarify the above quote: does it occasionally start (however reluctantly) and then run normally or does it stall every time?
I used to live in SoCal and my 2000 SV always needed a bit of choke to start and keep running.

It stalls first few times with poor response from throttle, eventually it starts and keeps running. Would that suggest the fuel/vacuum hose are fine?
