You need to heat the area with a hair dryer, then peel off the transparent sticker ontop of the sticker (you don't even realise it's there).
Continue to heat, and using a plastic card (not anything you want as the haet from the hair dryer tends to melt it) push the sides of the sticker up to peel it off.
Once all the plastic is removed (it takes ****ing ages) use wd40 to remove the residue before finally using a bit of car wax to finish it off.
If you have an 'S' then the sticker on the inside of the fairing, infront of the brake lever is a lot easier to get off.
I wouldn't try petrol, and definately not in conjunction with the hair dryer
