I don't know about the earlier SVs, but most bikes have a pretty simple switched with a central rod, attached to the pedal via a spring.
Twist this switch in it's mounting until the light comes on when you want.
On another note, you should probably make sure the lever is greased properly, they get sticky quite quickly.
