If you're on a straight road, I can't think of any excuses for not at least having an idea of what's behind you.

Having a look is OK, but my point is that there are times you might not see everything, and the person/bike/car/articulated lorry (OK, maybe not the lorry) may benefit from your signal. It's small percentages, but someone you might not see may be affected by you for instance, if you go from 1st to second lane on a motorway whilst someone is going 3rd to 2nd lane, you can move at the same time and the other rider/driver may not be apparent to you as they are two lanes away and slightly back.
