Well, on many of the larger highways around metropolitan areas we have HOV lanes (high occupancy vehicle) which are required to have more than one person in the automobile. These lanes tend to be mostly free of traffic, as people are stupid and drive themselves in their gas guzzling SUV [rant saved for another thread...] and cycles are allowed to drive in those lanes.
Soooo... You
can do better than cars in most cases. But in full blown traffic your not
supposed to split lanes in most of the states.
