To be honest, done in such a way, I think it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do - it at least means your not going to shock yourself the first time it's unleashed.
If it gives you more confidence in knowing what you are dealing with first time on the open road then it can only be a good thing. The main danger I figure in having a bike you got used to suddenly being, in effect, a strange bike is either over-confidence or nervousness.
Both can be as bad as each other.
