I would think its the speedo sensor / drive on the front wheel itself, these seem to be very fragile.

Have you had the front wheel out recently for anything ? if so the speedo sensor can get damaged when you replace the wheel. When my speedo stopped working it was also accompanied by a squealing or sqeaking coming from the speedo drive.
