4 - 6k is fine for normal riding. As someone else said, it's the only way to be sure you're not doing stupid speeds!
Keep them up higher if you're overtaking a line of cars and keep bobbing in and out the line. Just be aware (if you've not found out already!!) that a few seconds of wide-open throttle in second gear on an R6 that's already doing 9k revs means you'll be going MUCH MUCH faster than the traffic, so allow for it when braking to pop back in the line again!
I remember this being one of the biggest differences for me when I changed to an R6 from the SV...
