It really is a lottery half the videos say go 8 and the other say use the extra bit. I suppose everything in cycling is like that.
I do have to say it took me ages to do because I was trying to watch Cav and Wiggo at the world championships while I was doing it.

Yes, it can be made easier by cutting a short section off and covering the shifter bracket, unless there was a piece in the kit, there usually is. Even if I'm doing figure 8 I use that extra bit on the shifter bracket.
I always find a gap I hadn't seen, my lines are never as neat as factory taped bars and the bit inside the bar is never right.
