If I read your post right you can start it by bypassing the starter switch circuit at the solonoid but not by doing the same at the actual switch?Sounds like that circuit must be faulty somewhere. Old SVs have some chafe/failure points in the wiring harness and one is where it goes round the steering stem area. Worth another look?
