Old trick we use for removing Aircraft decals.Soak a bit of cloth with some solvent,even White spirit/turps substitute will do,then tape over it and onto the area that needs the gunk softening and leave for 30 mins+

It holds the vapours in so they don't evaporate and can soften/melt the gunk.

Works well on Boot rubber marks on COLD exhausts as well
