OEM pads, they're six years old and have been in for 25,000 miles so that might have something to do with it. It was just quite sudden, one minute the pad was there, the next the lever went to the stop, no warning.
It nearly happened on my last SV with OEM pads, 5 years old and in for 30,000 miles, but luckily I caught them in time when I noticed that the pad material was starting to break up and chunks were falling out and replaced them.
I only really use the rear for hill starts, sitting stationary, slow first gear corners or occasionally to smooth braking with a pillion, so they don't wear out. Both my SVs have been second hand so I guess the lesson is to change the rear pads when I buy a new bike then every few years or so after!
