polishing stainless header phenomenon
I like shiny exhausts, maybe because my first 6 bikes had chrome pipes, anyway, I polish my stainless front header to a chrome like finish. It's a never ending task, after 1 ride the exhaust has started to turn a golden colour which gets darker with each ride. Depending on the weather brown tarnish spots will start to appear and these can be time consuming to remove.
I therefore tend to polish the header every couple of rides using whatever cloths I have handy and Solvol. What I've noticed is if I put the Solvol directly onto my disposable vinyl gloves and rub the header it requires far less effort and the shiny, chrome finish is restored in a much quicker time.
Solvol tends to release a characteristic smell when polishing metal and that smell is generated far more quickly when rubbing the metal with Solvol on the vinyl gloves.
I don't think it would help if you've never polished your headers, though.
