What no one seems to have mentioned is lift the chain off the rear sprocket. If it clears the sprocket excessively then it's toast as it has stretched along it's length. There should be a section int he manual where it advises to count the number of links in a running length with a 20lb weight attached or something similar. Then you know its shot.
