They'll probably refuse payment on the basis the sign falling was an act of God.
I dealt with a job where a Texaco garage forecourt sign fell off the canopy and cut right into a car boot. The garage insurance refused payment... Act of God.
From what I could understand, if the company can show they took reasonable steps to ensure the sign was secure by having a maintenance schedule, then it's just one of those unlucky things.
Then again, they may cough up straight away!
