Closure!
Thanks to everyone who posted advice - my clutch is now fixed.
A combination of new balls in the actuator (and the associated grease) and draining out the worryingly large quantity of excess engine oil has fixed it.
Still haven't sorted the oil leak - I'm making do with a rag and daily level checks for now.
