If you want crisp photos you generally need to use a Prime Lens, I have got a 50mm Prime lens for my Canon 600D and it gives some amazing images, but, obviously you're restricted on where you can stand.

Also, with a prime you can get a really low "f"-value, which gives lovely point focused images, but, the lower the "f" value the higher the cost of the lens usually.
I have a 30mm to 75mm zoom lens as my standard lens on my Canon, but, I find this is never as "professional" looking in its ability to take photos;
