Default Summer Project

Like many modern families, my son and I were running out of space. Our double garage was full (of a Porsche on one side, 2 motorbikes, 3 pushbikes and as much of a workshop as I could fit myself around on the other), the car port was occupied by our daily driver, the garage extension had the Bloop as well as lots of everyday stuff and the shed was similarly full. Then arrived my SV650 project bike: the garage was shuffled to make enough room, but it was a struggle every time I wanted to take a bike out or work on something. We had to find a bit more room (which might then become an excuse to fill it with some more motorbikes and pushbikes). Enter my summer project: the bike-shed.

I had a sliver of land 8m long, 2.1m wide at the front tapering down to 1.2m at the back at the side of the house, that wasn’t really being used for anything:

The decision was made: I needed a place to fit some more bikes in. A firm I’d used previously was contracted to fit a cantilever roof covering the whole space (and so avoiding the need for building control approval) for only £1600, I added some outside electrics and have just finished a reinforced concrete slab which will be the floor and the footing for the outside wall:

All that remains is to build a brick and block wall along the outside (not quite touching the cantilever roof of course - so as not to upset the local authority) and hang a couple of gates each end:

I should have it finished by the end of June, so the SV and the Bloop will have better homes, I can reclaim my workshop and maybe acquire another bike during next winter.

I like having a project to keep me busy, and take a pride in keeping the costs down (there is nothing wrong with being frugal). The roof was the most expensive element at £1600, the concrete slab was £240 in materials (I had the mesh and DPM spare, and did the mixing and fixing myself) - same for the electrics (fortunately I’m qualified as an electrician), I bought the concrete blocks for £50 (left over from an extension project) and a mate has just donated two pallets of bricks (that will just cost a few beer vouchers) - so I’m aiming to bring the whole project in at about £2000 (if I can find some gates on Freecycle).

I’m thinking I might need something interesting and useful like a ZZR1100 to fill the space in October/November when used bike prices are at their nadir.
