In those circumstances, Pete, I think safety needs to overcome aesthetics - it really was a little too dark to be riding without lights on at 9pm.

Fair comment Lozzo. Although it's laziness rather than worrying about the looks.
If it had been more built up or the roads had been busier than I certainly would have taken them off.
