The 35-105 is a nice lens. I used it when I went to Elvington last year and images were pretty good. Heavy as you say but solid.
I also have the 75-150 f4, slightly longer but a little lighter and has a built in lens hood. Don't want to tempt you before Christmas but WYC have one (exc) on sale for £15.
