you do it correctly. mechanics are apes and apply the "tight up till almost stripped thread" principle just in case it comes loose and they get sued.

there should never be a need to use a torque wrench on anything but critical components like engine parts. never trust a torque wrench. especially with old or "wet" threads.

i always do another tighten after a few miles.
