Don't know if it's true and never felt the need to look it up but interesting theory. Perhaps BSA thought it might keep the rust at bay! ... clearly didn't work.

They did find that vehicles where the positive battery terminal was earthed to the body that vehicles rusted a lot more, so that is the reason given for changing the grounding to the negative of battery to bodywork. Electrons flow from negative to positive while conventional flow is nominated as from positive to negative ( they originally thought positive ions were responsible for electrical flow, and they did flow from positive to negative ) ,in electrical flow the ions don't move, it is the holes the electrons leave behind in valency band when they move that flow from positive to negative - maybe with positive earthed the 'holes' flowed into the vehicle bodywork
