There's a brilliant bit in a Christopher Brookmyre book where a guy tries to escape from terrorists in the venitlation ducts... makes a load of noise, gets stuck, is sick on a terrorist becaues of claustrophobia, then falls through the roof.

And with the exploding cars... There was a study in the states that concluded that one fo the reasons that deaths from fires in crashes have risen despite safety improvements, is that people won't go near a burning car- everyone knows they always blow up, so people get left to slowly burn to death. Lovely. Likewise, there was a suspected (though not proven) increase in paralysing injuries caused by people dragging crash victims out of lightly damaged cars on the assumption that they'd probably blow up.
