I think you nailed it. No-one wants equality. It's all about getting ahead so you can reproduce more than the next guy - the idea being that the best genes will win.
Doesn't really work anymore but the human psyche hasn't caught up. I mean I thought being a biker would have the ladies queuing up at the door...
