Cardiff is a great place to visit I found. The Cardiff Bay area is great for a more chilled night out than the city centre. Don't go weekends or when a big event is on if you don't like crowds and / or drunks
Butetown (I think) has some great little venues. Saw Toyah doing an acoustic gig there a few years ago in a little theatre.
Must organise another visit.
