I find the gear indicator (standard on AL7) useful, mainly when trying to sort out neutral , and as seeker says it is useful when not in a hurry and getting max mpg etc. Same with fuel gauge, some people are happy with a fuel light but I doubt you would sell many cars if they didn't have a fuel gauge and just had a light with 'you will run out of fuel in 20 miles' on it.
